Div 2 Surrey League Round 2 2019 Race Report

Kia ora folks, now the mud has settled - thank you everyone for making round 2 a special one!

Course

I hope you like the course I cooked up. Take a look on Strava for the lap record. And the KOM goes to….. John Sanderson in div 1. Since, he’s not in div 2, the fastest div 2 runner was…. Dom Nolan who won the race. Can I ask whoever created the segment, can you be so kind to rename the segment: Andrew Han: "Don't Hurt Yourselves Because I'll Get In Trouble" Surrey League XC Lap?

Results

I published the results at 3:20pm on Saturday. Andy Robinson, do I hold the record for the fastest results published on Surrey League? I used Opentrack and I can highly recommend it. Slightly dubious that we processed the results and we narrowly edged Ranelagh Harriers out for the win. Croydon 3rd and Woking 4th. To be honest, I wasn’t sure we won as I saw the pack of greyhounds come charging-in. Ranelagh Harriers, absolutely ran away in the B team competition!

A big congratulations to Wimbledon Windmilers for winning the biggest team of the day competition!

General Info

1. Date: 1pm Saturday 9 November 2019

3. Strict Rule: NO PARKING at the Common and NO COWBELLS due to horse riders. If you see someone using cowbells, please explain to them to stop.

4. Travelling to venue: The 93 bus route from Putney to Sutton (via Wimbledon) goes past the common - alight at Parkside Hospital or Queensmere Road.

5. Course Description:

Click on “Map in (mapometer)” to see map.

The startline is a short jog north of HQ. The course is two laps for senior men and one for young athletes predominantly through woodland.

The first two kms is flat and fast running past Kingsmere pond before turning right and running parallel to the A219 before looping back to HQ.

Second half is a bit harder work: Head north before sharp left going up over the “lumpy” Big Alp and fast descent going past HQ. Head towards the Windmill then a quick descent heading towards Queensmere and get ready for the “log steeplechase”! After Queensmere, sharp right and get your climbing legs out to head over Little Alps down the other side and go straight ahead for to start of second lap. For young athletes (Senior men end of second lap), turn right for final sprint to finish line.

HQ and “log steeplechase” is a good area to watch the race!

And the all-important question, “what shoes should I wear?” The course is muddy at parts but dry and stony at another. It’s not forecast to rain much leading up to the race and and the course will dry up. Come early, recce the course and decide for yourself, I would go for fast trail / fell shoes. Strava link to recce the course: Division 1 & 2U13 and U15/17.

6. Race Timetable and Distance:

Division Two             1:00 pm          8.5km
